FastLane 2017: Highs & Lows From The Final PPV Before WrestleMania 33 – Part 8

High #5: Goldberg Is The New WWE Universal Champion

Former WWE & WCW World Heavyweight Champion Bill Goldberg defeated Kevin Owens in just 22 seconds to capture the WWE Universal Championship at FastLane 2017. This is Goldberg’s first World Title run in over 13 years.

Goldberg will now defend the Title against Brock Lesnar (who he defeated in 1 minute and 26 seconds at Survivor Series 2016) in the main event of WrestleMania 33.

Many fans are wondering why Goldberg is having very short matches in his return. First of all, that’s his gimmick – to destroy people within minutes and that’s realistic from his physique and the intensity that he has.

But the most important reason behind Goldberg’s short matches is that when a wrestler has been away from in-ring action for so many years (12 years in Goldberg’s case), that wrestler WILL get hurt when he returns to in-ring action. The same thing happened with The Rock, twice, in 2012 and 2013.

When Goldberg signed a new deal with WWE prior to Survivor Series 2016, they had to make the decision to protect Goldberg as there were plans for him to work multiple PPVs before WrestleMania 33.

Goldberg is now scheduled to have a full fledged match with Lesnar at WrestleMania 33, a match where you will see Goldberg taking bumps.
