Charlotte Flair has opened up about how deeply online criticism and plastic surgery rumors have affected her behind the scenes. In her revealing piece for The Players’ Tribune, Charlotte shared how, after returning from a six-week hiatus due to COVID-19, she felt proud of transforming her body and getting into the best shape of her life.
“I’d lost like 25 pounds. I got leaner, and more toned. I felt so great,” Charlotte recalled. But the celebration was short-lived. After performing on RAW, she checked her phone and found thousands of notifications filled with speculation and cruel remarks about her appearance.
Comments flooded social media questioning whether she’d undergone surgery. “OK. What the f*** happened to Charlotte Flair?! Holy s*** her whole body is fake. You KNOW she got work done… She looks like her DAD in a WIG,” she quoted from the hateful messages.
Charlotte acknowledged that being in a high-profile profession inevitably subjects her to scrutiny but explained that the attacks blur the lines between her public persona and her private self. “People are getting smarter and smarter when it comes to understanding the wrestling business. Everyone ‘knows everything’ now… And yet, the smarter that people get about wrestling, the easier they seem to forget the basic concepts. Like the concept that I’m not Charlotte Flair.”
She described how fans expect her to embody the confident, villainous “Queen,” but in reality, she’s just Ashley Fliehr, a person who struggles with self-esteem and vulnerability.
“When that camera turns off, I’m just Ashley,” she wrote. “Unlike Charlotte, Ashley is not always supremely confident. And sometimes she does get rattled. And she doesn’t win constantly.”
Charlotte revealed that while she tries not to take the comments personally, moments like those remind her that the harshest blows in wrestling often come from words, not physical bumps in the ring.
