On Netflix’s WWE Unreal, Triple H opened up about the top-secret planning behind one of the most shocking moments in WWE history: John Cena turning heel. According to the WWE Chief Content Officer, the idea was discussed among only five key people, each playing a critical role in the execution of this seismic creative shift. “There are five people that I talk to with a move this big. It’s Rock. Obviously, it’s Cody, Cena, Travis Scott, who we wanna help build this idea around, and then WWE President, of course, Nick Khan,” Triple H revealed.
His first call was to Nick Khan, who, aside from being WWE President, also sits on the board alongside The Rock. “I run the idea by him. Nick basically says, ‘Love all of it.’” Next up was The Rock. Triple H said he pitched the concept with a simple tease: “What if… Hear me out on this.” Though he was unsure at first how Dwayne Johnson would react, it quickly became clear that The Rock was on board. “I got to the end, and he was like, ‘Wow. Man, I gotta tell you, I think that’s genius.’” What followed was a 30-minute call where both men fed off each other’s excitement, brainstorming ideas and refining the vision.
Triple H then turned to Travis Scott, who was part of the creative build. “He loves it and says, ‘Let’s do this.’” Around that time, Cody Rhodes also got back in touch. “When I hit him with it, he’s like… like, ‘Holy sh*t, I didn’t think that’s what you were gonna say.’”
Then came the most crucial call of all – to John Cena himself. “John’s the best,” Triple H said. “He’s like, ‘Well, before you say it, just know if this is what you believe in, I’m in.’”
But Triple H didn’t want a polite answer. He pressed Cena for his honest gut reaction – not as a performer, but as a human being. “I said, ‘John, okay. Let’s take the bullsh*t hat off. Now, this is not the Head of Creative talking to you… I am asking John Cena the human being. Paul Levesque is talking to you.’”
He acknowledged the real-life stakes, including Cena’s movie career and PR commitments. “Give me your gut. You like it or you don’t.” Cena’s reply was, “‘I like it a lot, actually.’”
The call ended, but the momentum didn’t stop there. “Within a minute, minute and a half, I’ve gotten like three different texts from him of thoughts, ideas,” Triple H said. “I’m like, ‘Right, he’s… he’s engaged.’”
Once everyone was on board, the group moved into full coordination mode. “Everybody is getting together. Rock’s reaching out to Cody. Nick reaching out to Rock. Cody’s reaching out to Cena. Cena’s reaching out to everybody.”
And above all, secrecy was key. “One of the things that we all talked about on the phone was, ‘Let’s keep this tight.’ Nobody gets this information that isn’t on this phone call.”
The plan worked. Cena’s heel turn stunned the WWE Universe and now fans finally know how the biggest pivot of his career came to life.
