6. Big WWE World Title Match Set For No Mercy 2016
On tonight’s episode of SmackDown Live, Shane McMahon announced that “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles will defend his newly won WWE World Championship in a Triple Threat match against the former Champion, Dean Ambrose, and the guy he beat at SummerSlam 2016, John Cena, in the main event of No Mercy.
John Cena returned to WWE programming on tonight’s episode and said Styles has something he wants. This leads to Styles taking out Cena’s “Never Give Up” armband and throws it at him saying he doesn’t need it anyway. But Cena then points at the WWE World Championship and talks about how he wants to tie Ric Flair’s record for 16 World Title reigns.
A tag team match is set for the main event between the team of Dean Ambrose & John Cena vs. the team of WWE World Champion AJ Styles and a partner of his choosing. Styles failed to find a partner for himself and this led to SmackDown Live General Manager Daniel Bryan appointing James Ellsworth (Braun Strowman’s first squash match jobber from Raw) as Styles’ partner.
