AEW star MJF believes the path from the wrestling ring to Hollywood has become smoother thanks to the success of a few major names, and he didn’t mince words about who he thinks did it poorly. Speaking to TV Insider, MJF was asked if it’s easier these days for wrestlers to be seen as more than just wrestlers when auditioning for roles.
“It’s easier because of the work that The Rock, Bautista and (John) Cena put in,” he said. He praised the interviewer for the question, calling it “the only interview that gave me a question I liked,” and explained how perceptions have changed since he was a kid watching wrestling’s biggest names try their hand at acting.
“Growing up, you’re watching these guys break this mold that unfortunately Terry Bollea (Hulk Hogan) created by being one of the worst actors of all-time with Santa with Muscles, Mr. Nanny, and all that genuine garbage,” MJF said.
Instead, he pointed to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Dave Bautista, and John Cena as wrestlers who have proven themselves as legitimate actors.
“Here are three men who are just great actors and proving to the world what we do is really difficult. It takes a certain type of star power to make it to the top of the professional wrestling industry. Dare I say it’s just as hard or harder than making it in the acting industry,” he said.
MJF concluded by crediting The Rock, Batista, and Cena with breaking the mold and opening doors for talents like himself in Hollywood.
“I think those three guys broke the mold and allowed a guy like me to really get opportunities in the land of Hollywood.”
MJF played the role of one of Adam Sandler’s sons in Happy Gilmore 2.
