In the main event of SummerSlam 2025 – Night 1, CM Punk defeated Gunther to win the World Heavyweight Championship. After the match, Mr. Money In The Bank Seth Rollins came out on crutches and showed that he’s not injured. Rollins attacked Punk with the briefcase and cashed-in his contract. Rollins hit the Stomp for the win and became the new World Heavyweight Champion.
TNA World Tag Team Champion Matt Hardy is happy about Punk’s loss because Punk successfully cashed-in the MITB contract on Jeff Hardy at Extreme Rules 2009. Here’s what Matt tweeted:
“Yo @WWERollins… Thank you for avenging my brother @JEFFHARDYBRAND tonight at #WWESummerSlam! @WWE”

Paul Heyman issued the following statement after Seth’s win, where he took a shot at Triple H for not taking a backstage photo with Rollins after the show ended:
“Isn’t this a tradition in WWE that the brand new champion always poses in the gorilla position with someone? Did we make people mad? Are you all upset with us? I hate to say we told you so, but we told you about Plan B so Ladies and Gentlemen, my name is Paul Heyman and I represent not only Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed, but the reigning, defending…
Seth Rollins!”

Rollins’ shocking MITB cash-in on Punk wasn’t just a surprise for fans – it caught much of the backstage crew and even those closest to him completely off guard. According to Fightful Select, the plan for Rollins to cash-in had been a tentative idea floating around since before Saturday Night’s Main Event. While many insiders speculated the moment might come to fruition during tonight’s show, it wasn’t listed on any internal rundowns circulated ahead of the broadcast.
In fact, by the afternoon, most staff backstage were under the impression that a cash-in was not in the works. That was reportedly updated to “not expecting a cash in” – deliberately vague phrasing that did little to tip anyone off.
It wasn’t until Rollins actually emerged backstage during the main event at SummerSlam that people began to realize it was truly happening. The surprise was so tightly held that even trainees at Rollins’ own wrestling school, Black and Brave, were kept in the dark.
In a further testament to the level of secrecy WWE is maintaining, Fightful reports that plans for the main event of Night 2 – featuring John Cena vs. Cody Rhodes – is also being kept under tight wraps. Whatever’s planned for that marquee showdown, WWE appears intent on preserving every element of surprise.
Drew McIntyre Comments On CM Punk Losing The World Title In 5 Minutes
During the SummerSlam Saturday post-show, Drew McIntyre said the following about Seth Rollins successfully cashing-in the Money in the Bank contract on CM Punk to win the World Heavyweight Championship, thus ending Punk’s title reign in about 5 minutes:
“OK, I’m gonna have to say something about this. Karma’s a hell of a thing. I’ve been watching what’s going on and Seth and I are professional rivals. Seth has done exactly to Punk what Punk did to me and tonight was a cherry on top. Congratulations Seth, you deserve it and Karma is indeed a b*tch.”
McIntyre teamed up with Logan Paul to defeat Jelly Roll and Randy Orton. McIntyre had the following to say about his win:
“Maybe I needed someone to watch my back this entire time. Maybe that’s what I was missing. I always felt I had to be a loner. They’re taking on the whole world, try to represent the universe until after Hell in the Cell, when I realize that nobody cared about me. No one talked about me for three months.
But having Logan watch my back, having some success, maybe that’s why I need it all along. So Jelly Roll… nice try. You failed, reality hero. That’s what’s beginning now. The gratitude era is over. The reality era begins.”
