28. Big WWE Universal Championship Match For 2017 Cancelled
Before Goldberg signed a new contract with WWE, there were plans for only one match between Brock Lesnar and Goldberg. Lesnar was supposed to win that one-off match and then move on to the Title scene in 2017.
There were plans for Brock Lesnar to challenge Kevin Owens for the WWE Universal Championship at either Royal Rumble 2017 or WrestleMania 33.

However, Goldberg signing a new WWE deal and then being booked to go over Lesnar in a dominating fashion at Survivor Series 2016 resulted in those Title plans for Lesnar being nixed.
Lesnar is expected to face Goldberg in their third and final match at WrestleMania 33.
29. Jim Ross Addresses Rumors of Lesnar – Goldberg Match Being Booked As A “Real MMA Fight”
There’s a rumor going on that the original plans for Lesnar vs. Goldberg match was for it to be similar to a “Real/MMA fight”. WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross had the following to say about this:
Saw online where, allegedly, WWE gave their broadcasters instructions on how to frame their narrative for the Goldberg-Lesnar bout at Survivor Series and it was reported that it was to call the match as if it were a real fight with MMA flavor. My question would be why wouldn’t that be the goal on every bout that fits that description or comes close.
This is not just for WWE but for every wrestling promotion that is if the goal is still to get one’s audience to buy in and suspend their disbelief while getting lost in the story. That is the objective, right?
