The Undertaker addressed a viral clip from a WWE Live Event in Vienna, Austria from the late 2000s, explaining his out-of-character behavior during the match.
Speaking on his Six Feet Under podcast, he revealed two key aspects: he didn’t realize he was being filmed and used the match to teach younger wrestlers, like Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase, by demonstrating the importance of in-ring moments through experience rather than just instruction.
During the match, The Undertaker created a memorable moment while working toward a “hot tag”. He stormed back and forth on the apron multiple times, causing fans to react to his unusually animated behavior. A planned spot involved a security guard placing an open water bottle on the top step, which The Undertaker used to spray water, amplifying the drama and energy of the scene.
The Phenom emphasized this was part of his teaching style, making even small actions meaningful to enhance the flow of the match and highlight the significance of a wrestler’s comeback. He humorously mentioned the scene’s popularity on YouTube and joked about his apparent energy, crediting it to First Form Ignition pre-workout.
Ultimately, The Undertaker saw the moment as a rare chance to step out of character, entertain the audience, and offer a glimpse of a different side of himself while maintaining the match’s educational value.
Here’s what The Deadman said:
“There are two parts to that. First, you think you’re at a house show in Vienna, and you’re not being filmed, so you forget that cell phones are everywhere, and everything is going to make its way out somehow.
Obviously, in the States on TV, I would never work this way, but I’m in the ring, and I have an opportunity to teach and work with the young guys. Cody might have been one of those young guys, and so was DiBiase. You use those moments to teach. That’s how I taught when I was still working. You can talk to someone until you’re blue in the face, but unless they experience it or see it, they don’t always understand it the way you perceive it.
So, we’re working towards a hot tag, and we’ve had a long heat. It’s almost time for me to get in, and they’re getting close to giving me the tag. At one point, it looked like I was about to take the whole bucket of First Form Ignition and just eat it.
I’ve seen that video, and I probably went up and down the apron about 8 times, and then there was the big moment. It was funny because one of our security guys had the spot of placing the water bottle on the top step with the lid off. He’d look at me, and I’d give him the signal like, ‘Get the bottle ready’. So, I’m storming back and forth, and then the water starts spraying everywhere. No one ever sees me like that, so they were losing their minds, like, ‘What’s gotten into Undertaker?’
But that’s just me teaching and trying to show that this is important. It’s the little things. I’m not doing anything, but I’m doing everything. I’m making this tag that he just sold, making it mean something. And when I get in, this energy I’m using is how you need to feed my comeback to keep it rolling.
Yeah, it looks like a tremendous YouTube clip. That was the only time I really got to step out of character to let people experience that.”
