Christopher Daniels says one of the biggest rumors surrounding his name in wrestling was never actually true, and even if it was, it would’ve been a terrible idea. Appearing on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Daniels addressed the long-running claim that he was once considered to be the ‘Higher Power’ in the WWF’s 1999 storyline involving The Undertaker and The Ministry of Darkness. According to Christopher, not only was he never told anything about it, but the idea wouldn’t have made sense back then.

“I didn’t hear this until years later,” Daniels said. “Maybe, but it was never anything that they told me, and honestly, it was a terrible idea anyway. Because the idea would have been Undertaker is answering to this higher power, and then I unmask, and it’s me, and it’s like, Who the f**k is this guy?”

Christopher wasn’t a WWF name at the time, he was still mostly known in independent circles, which is exactly why he feels the reveal would’ve fallen flat. He compared it to a real situation he experienced in WCW, where a similar mystery gimmick failed almost instantly.

“I remember going to WCW one day, cutting this promo backstage with Vampiro, I’ve got this hood, and then it comes on live Nitro, and we watch it. And as soon as it’s done, Jeff Jarrett goes, ‘Who the f**k was that?!’ And I was like, ‘That’s me, sir.’ Then that flopped so quickly that they didn’t go forward with that idea.”

While Daniels did work some dark matches for the WWF around that period, he thinks any talk about him being the ‘Higher Power’ probably came from fans or people connecting dots based on his ‘Fallen Angel’ character.

“I think they thought, Oh, well, maybe this is something that we could use him as,” he said. “But honestly, I think once Vince saw me, and, you know, I’m 5’10” and this is the time when everybody is six feet something, it’s like, we can do better. And I was like, that makes sense.”

The ‘Higher Power’ storyline ended with Vince McMahon being revealed as the figure pulling the string, a move that shocked viewers but at least came with name recognition.
