• “All they were gonna do was job me out for the whole year” – Kurt Angle On Refusing To Retire In 2020
On a recent episode of Chris Jericho’s weekly ‘Talk Is Jericho’ podcast, Kurt Angle revealed that if he hadn’t retired at WrestleMania 35, he would have been booked to do jobs for another year, which he obviously felt would have tarnished his legacy.
Here’s what the 2017 WWE Hall of Famer had to say about asking Vince McMahon in early 2019 to wrestle John Cena one last time:
“Well Vince [McMahon] said, ‘Well Kurt, you can do that next year.’ I was like, ‘Vince, I’m retiring this year.’ He said, ‘Well if you wait another year, I could do that for you.’
I said, ‘No, no, I’m gonna do it this year’ because there was no way in hell I was gonna wrestle another year especially in WWE because all they were gonna do was job me out for the whole year so, I knew, I could see the writing on the wall and I didn’t know if I wanted to be a part of that.”
Angle’s decision to retire at WrestleMania 35 (in front of 82,000 fans) worked out well for him. Had he waited for his last match to be against John Cena at WrestleMania 36, then his last match would’ve taken place in front of 0 fans at the WWE Performance Center.
Kurt Angle wrestled for the World Wrestling Federation (later WWE) from 1999 until 2006 and again from 2017 till his retirement in 2019.
