Below are some top WWE news stories of the day, involving Nia Jax, The Rock and Gunther.

• Former WWE announcer Jonathan Coachman criticized current WWE Women’s Champion Nia Jax during a recent appearance on the Behind The Turnbuckle: The Last Word podcast, claiming her dislike for him stemmed from her loyalty to Renee Young. Renee eventually replaced Coachman on the RAW commentary team.

Coachman also expressed his belief that Jax’s WWE success, including her title reigns, was due more to her family connections, particularly to The Rock, than her in-ring skills.

“I never thought she was very good. She’s always been protected by being in the family with The Rock.”

He contrasted her with RAW’s Women’s World Champion Liv Morgan, calling Morgan the “MVP of 2024” for her compelling storyline and merchandise success.

“Liv Morgan has been the MVP of 2024 on RAW. On the other show, SmackDown, what did Nia Jax do? Nothing, because that’s what she’s always done.”

Coachman also criticized Jax’s acting abilities and accused her of hypocrisy, claiming she wanted to be treated like her male counterparts but did not accept criticism in the same way.

“These women want to be looked at the same as men. They want to be criticized. Oh no, they don’t want to be criticized. They want it both ways.”

• World Heavyweight Champion Gunther is nearing the completion of a significant multi-year contract extension with WWE, with the deal reportedly in its final stages or already finalized.

Gunther has earned widespread praise within WWE for his exceptional contributions. According to Fightful Select, company sources regard him as a standout talent who has far surpassed expectations. “The company has been thrilled with Gunther’s performance in the ring and at media obligations,” one source shared. A WWE official even described him as “among the most professional talents they had ever worked with.”

Since joining WWE in 2019, Gunther has left an indelible mark, from dominating NXT to elevating the Intercontinental Championship with a record-setting reign. Now, as World Heavyweight Champion, his reign continues to impress, most recently with a successful defense against Damian Priest at Survivor Series.

Gunther’s attitude and work ethic have made him a favorite within the organization. With this new contract, WWE is solidifying “The Ring General” as a pivotal figure for its future.

His next title defense will be against Finn Balor on Saturday Night’s Main Event.
