Below are a couple of top WWE & AEW news stories of the day, featuring Hulk Hogan and Ricky Steamboat.
• Ben Affleck might be cast as 2-time WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan. Hogan mentioned last year that his Netflix biopic, initially set to star Chris Hemsworth, was delayed due to a “business glitch,” prompting him to abandon the project. However, PWInsider now reveals that a screenplay about Hogan’s lawsuit against Gawker is gaining traction in Hollywood and is expected to proceed soon.
The film, titled “KILLING GAWKER,” is linked to Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s production company, Artist Equity, with a potential release in January 2025. If the project moves forward, Affleck and Damon are likely to portray Hogan and billionaire Peter Thiel, respectively. The screenplay, written by 2016 Academy Award winner Charles Randolph, is based on Ryan Holiday’s book “Conspiracy: Peter Thiel, Hulk Hogan, Gawker, and the Anatomy of Intrigue.”
Holiday’s book covers Hogan’s lawsuit against Gawker for releasing an explicit video that Hogan didn’t know was being recorded. Thiel, an investor in Facebook and co-founder of PayPal, secretly funded Hogan’s lawsuit to harm Gawker for previous negative coverage about him. In 2016, Hogan won the case and was awarded over $100 million, leading to Gawker’s closure.
Affleck and Damon are set to collaborate on another sports biopic, having previously played Phil Knight and Sonny Vaccaro in “Air,” a film about Nike’s deal with Michael Jordan for Air Jordan sneakers.
