23. John Cena’s Opponent For Battleground 2017 Revealed, Title Match Set

On this week’s episode of SmackDown Live, 16 time WWE World Heavyweight Champion John Cena made his return to WWE programming and he talked about how he wants to face top up and coming wrestlers from both Raw & SmackDown Live (this being the reason behind him being a “Free Agent”). Cena was interrupted by Rusev (who made his return to WWE programming as well) and Cena challenged Rusev to a “Flag Match”. This Flag match will now take place at Battleground 2017 PPV. This will be Cena’s first PPV match since WrestleMania 33.

In the main event of the show, “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles won the Independence Day Battle Royal to become the #1 contender for the United States Championship. He’ll now face Kevin Owens for the US Title at Battleground 2017.

UPDATE: AJ Styles defeated Kevin Owens at a WWE Live Event in Madison Square Garden to become the new United States Champion. He’ll now defend the Title against Owens in a rematch at the Battleground 2017 PPV.

Below is the updated match-card for Battleground 2017:

Punjabi Prison Match For The WWE Championship: Jinder Mahal (c) vs. Randy Orton

Flag Match: John Cena vs. Rusev
