The 1st WWE premium live event after WrestleMania 39 will take place tonight in Puerto Rico – Backlash 2023.

This will be the 1st WWE PPV in Puerto Rico since New Year’s Revolution in January 2005.

According to both Brandon Thurston, Puerto Rico Convention Center District Authority (PRCDA) and the Puerto Rico Tourism Company paid WWE $1.5 million to bring Backlash to Puerto Rico.

During the WWE Q1 2023 earnings call, Nick Khan confirmed this report when he said the following:

“We also received a 7-figure subsidy for Backlash.”

The biggest match on the card is Brock Lesnar vs. Cody Rhodes.

Xero News is reporting that this highly anticipated match could open the show (instead of being the main event) and there have been discussions of it being a squash match.

Insider source BoozerRasslin then reported:

“No squash plans ‘yet’. But it should be the usual 15 minutes by Brock.”

Word going on is that the new main event might be Bad Bunny vs. Damian Priest in a San Juan Street Fight.

Cody appeared on last night’s SmackDown and cut a promo about Lesnar.

Rhodes said when he thinks about Brock, the word that comes to his mind is ‘gatekeeper’. He said Lesnar never explained why he attacked him, but maybe he will after he gets beat by The American Nightmare.

Cody ended his promo by saying that at Backlash, he will get back on the road to finishing the story and claiming the kingdom after defeating The Beast.
