Chris Benoit Won His 1st World Title 21 Years Ago Today

On this day in Pro Wrestling history on January 16, 2000, Ted Turner’s World Championship Wrestling aired their annual ‘WCW Souled Out’ event LIVE on PPV from the Firstar Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The originally booked and promoted main event of WCW World Heavyweight Champion Bret “The Hitman” Hart defending his title against #1 contender Sid Vicious had to be cancelled & changed, because Bret had to end his career a few days before the PPV.

In the main event of the show, Chris Benoit defeated Sid Vicious to win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, thus becoming a World Champion for the 1st time in his career.

– Tank Abbott defeated Jerry Flynn

– Last Man Standing: Buff Bagwell defeated Diamond Dallas Page

– Caged Heat: The Wall defeated Billy Kidman

– Hardcore Match: Kevin Nash defeated Terry Funk

– WCW World Heavyweight Championship (vacant): Chris Benoit defeated Sid Vicious
