Below are a couple of top WWE news stories of the day, involving Seth Rollins and WWE Speed.
• At last night’s WrestleMania 40 Kickoff press conference, World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins was hoping Men’s Royal Rumble winner Cody Rhodes would choose him as his WrestleMania opponent, but Cody chose WWE Champion Roman Reigns.
According to the Wrestling Observer, current plan is for a Men’s Elimination Chamber match to take place in Australia on February 24, with the winner of that match facing Rollins on the same night for the World Title:
“The belief is that Rollins will defend against the winner of the men’s Chamber match on that same show, but such a match has not been announced. And it couldn’t be announced since the tease was Rhodes vs. Rollins and announcing the match doesn’t make sense until this coming week.”
• Before an episode of SmackDown in December, a new concept called “WWE Speed” was introduced, featuring 5-minute matches.
The first round of matches included Bronson Reed defeating NXT’s Nathan Frazier and Cedric Alexander defeating Axiom.
Corey Graves and Kevin Patrick provided commentary, suggesting that these matches might be aired on WWE’s social media channels.
Each match had a “WWE Speed” graphic and a countdown timer, and wrestlers from various brands were featured on the LED boards around the ring.
WWE has filed to trademark “WWE Speed” for entertainment services with the United States Patent and Trademark Office:
“Mark For: WWE SPEED™ trademark registration is intended to cover the categories of production, exhibition and distribution of professional wrestling events rendered live and through broadcast media including television and distributed via various platforms across multiple forms of transmission media.
Providing wrestling news and information through broadcast media including television and distributed via various platforms across multiple forms of transmission media; providing a website in the field of wrestling information.”
During the WrestleMania 40 Kickoff press conference, Michael Cole announced that WWE Speed will debut on Twitter / X in April after WrestleMania XL.
