Starrcade

On this day in Pro Wrestling history on December 27, 1993, Ted Turner’s World Championship Wrestling aired their annual ‘Starrcade’ event LIVE on PPV from the Independence Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina.

This 10 year Anniversary edition of Starrcade saw “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair replacing Sid Vicious as the #1 contender for the WCW World Heavyweight Champion in the PPV’s main event against Champion Big Van Vader, as well as The Boss (WWF’s Big Boss Man) replacing “The British Bulldog” Davey Boy Smith as the #1 contender for Rick Rude’s WCW International Heavyweight Championship.

While Sid was suspended after the infamous double stabbing incident with Arn Anderson, The British Bulldog got fired after knocking out a man at a bar who was making advances towards Davey’s wife.

The main event was now billed as a “Title vs. Career” match, so if Flair won, he’d win the World Title, but if Vader retained, Flair’s career would be over.

Here are the results:

• Pretty Wonderful def. 2 Cold Scorpio & Marcus Alexander Bagwell

• The Shockmaster def. Awesome Kong

• WCW World Television Championship
Lord Steven Regal (c) (with Sir William) wrestled Ricky Steamboat to a time-limit draw
