• On This Day In Pro Wrestling History (August 9, 1997) – WCW ROAD WILD 1997

On this day in Pro Wrestling history on August 9, 1997, Ted Turner’s World Championship Wrestling aired ‘WCW Road Wild 1997’ LIVE on PPV from the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, South Dakota.

This was the second out of a total of 4 annual WCW events (1996-1999) from the Sturgis Harley Davidson Rally, and while all four events are usually destroyed by the critics for not earning a cent in revenue money because it was totally free for the bikers in attendance, they were still pretty cool & entertaining to watch for a fan, as big outdoor events always had kind of a special feeling to them.

Below are the results:

– Harlem Heat defeated Vicious and Delicious

– Mexican Death match

Konnan defeated Rey Misterio Jr.

– Elimination match

Steve McMichael & Chris Benoit defeated Jeff Jarrett & Dean Malenko

– WCW Cruiserweight Championship

Alex Wright (c) defeated Chris Jericho

– Ric Flair defeated Syxx

– Curt Hennig defeated Diamond Dallas Page

– The Giant defeated Randy Savage

– WCW World Tag Team Championship

The Steiner Brothers defeated The Outsiders (c) via DQ

– WCW World Heavyweight Championship

Hollywood Hogan defeated Lex Luger (c)

• Former TNA Star Calls Out Triple H For An NWA World Title Match

Former TNA star and current NWA World Heavyweight Champion Nick Aldis (Magnus in TNA) called out 14 time World Champion “The Game” Triple H during an appearance on Busted Open Radio.

Below is what Nick said:

“It’s my understanding that a certain man who has a lot of power in that company (WWE) who I have modeled myself after a lot over the years, has a replica of the 10 Pounds Of Gold on his office wall. All I’m saying is if he ever wants an opportunity to hold the real one in his hands, all he’s gotta do is pick up the phone.

It might be a chance for me to prove to the little birds he’s got buzzing around him that have been burying me to him that he’s been making an ill-informed decision when he had the chance.”

Nick was also asked about his thoughts on possibly working for WWE’s NXT UK brand and he said the following:

“People ask me about WWE UK, I’m like ‘are you kidding me? Not to disparage any of those guys but I’ve deposited more money in my bank account in one week than some of those guys are going to make in half a year on that contract.

That’s not a knock on them, yeah? It’s business, but at the end of the day, it’s like, why would I do that? I’m betting on myself.”
