Below are a couple of top news stories of the day, featuring Goldberg.

• Dolph Ziggler aka Nic Nemeth faced WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg in a brief and one-sided match at SummerSlam 2019. Reflecting on the event during an appearance on Busted Open Radio, Ziggler revealed that he had been planning to leave WWE at the time. His final days with the company were intended to involve putting over other wrestlers, including The Miz, who defeated Ziggler the night after SummerSlam.

“That Sunday and that Monday were supposed to be my last two days with the company,” said Ziggler. “I was retiring. I was putting over two guys on the way out.”

Ziggler was informed about his match with Goldberg shortly before the event, and he was unhappy with the role he was assigned. Frustrated, he approached Vince McMahon, expressing his displeasure and questioning his future with WWE.

“I go to the boss, and I am begging,” Ziggler said. “I go, ‘Boss, you could have a local do this. If I can’t do this, you can’t trust me to do this, then you can’t trust me to do anything. I don’t want to work here.’”

Ziggler noted that he had a handshake deal with Vince McMahon that he would leave the company after losing to Goldberg and Miz, but noted that McMahon reneged on the deal.

• On his podcast, Booker T recalled defeating Goldberg in WCW and explained why that happened. Here’s what the former WCW World Heavyweight Champion said:

“A lot of people don’t remember that I beat Goldberg. I was the guy to shut him down in the middle of the square circle. I beat all them suckers, man, DDP, everybody (laughs).

It was cool working with Goldberg. I must say that and you know why? We were friends. Goldberg wouldn’t have done that for anybody else in WCW at that time. He wouldn’t have gotten beat by anybody else in WCW at that time, but me, just because we were friends and he wanted to do something for me.

I’m giving it to you straight. No one’s ever heard that before. I remember when Bill Goldberg came to WWE and I was there to greet him. I was the guy that he knew he could call his friend in that locker room. That’s why if I call Bill right now, he’d answer the phone.

He’s one of the few friends I’ve had in the business that I could really say, Dallas Page, good friend, but there hasn’t been that many, but Goldberg, him and I, we’ve always been friends that I could call him and he would answer the phone every time.

If I need him to be there, he’s going to show up. That’s how good friends we are.”
