Gable Steveson, a gold medalist and one of the greatest amateur wrestlers in North American history, was released by NFL’s Buffalo Bills after not making the 53-man roster.

Despite being a world-class athlete, Steveson was an underdog due to his lack of football experience. He signed with the Bills in May as a defensive lineman after an unsuccessful stint with WWE.

Steveson played in all three of the Bills’ preseason games, recording three tackles and two QB hits. Although he didn’t secure a spot on the team, he may join a practice squad following the roster cuts.

Gable had previously excelled as a two-time NCAA Heavyweight Champion with an 83-2 record and a gold medal in freestyle wrestling at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. His transition to the NFL mirrors similar attempts by wrestlers like Brock Lesnar, who also tried out for the NFL without success.

With his NFL hopes now uncertain, Steveson could explore other options, such as joining another team’s practice squad or pursuing a career in MMA. For now, his NFL aspirations are on hold.

Steveson was released by WWE in May, after he didn’t show enough progress in training.

His agent issued the following statement regarding the end of his WWE run:

“Gable Steveson is very grateful for the opportunities he had with WWE and would like to thank everybody in the organization who helped him get there.

He would also like to thank all the fans for supporting him on his professional wrestling journey.

Now, Gable is ready to resume competing against elite-level competition and looks forward to sharing big news with you all very soon.”

Steveson only had one televised match in WWE. At NXT The Great American Bash 2023, he faced Baron Corbin. That match ended in a No Count-Out and fans reacted negatively to it.
