Goldberg last wrestled at the WWE Elimination Chamber 2022 PLE in Saudi Arabia, where he lost to Roman Reigns in a Universal Championship match.
This dream match was originally scheduled to take place at WrestleMania 36 in 2020, with Reigns challenging Goldberg for the Title, with the plan being for Reigns to start his lengthy title reign by dethroning the WCW Legend.
However, Reigns pulled out of the event due to health concerns.
During an interview with Chris Van Vliet, Goldberg said this match didn’t live up to his expectations because he had just recovered from COVID-19:
“No, it sucks, I had f**king COVID three weeks before I was asked to do it. It was horrible. No, it was a favor. It was my job, I’m not gonna say no, I’ve never said no really.
I was asked to wrestle twice a year, and they were caught between a rock and a hard place and I was their answer.
I feel like I did him a favor, and that’s why I thought that the favor would be reciprocated, but it is what it is.”
Reigns choked out Goldberg to win this match. It should be noted that Goldberg didn’t perform the Jackhammer during this match.
Bill Goldberg has noted in the past that Vince McMahon promised him a proper retirement match in WWE if he agreed to put over Roman. However, McMahon announced his retirement in 2022 and completely left TKO Group Holdings in 2024, without fulfilling his promise to Goldberg.
