On this day in Pro Wrestling history on September 11, 1997, Extreme Championship Wrestling held ‘ECW WrestleFest: 50 Years of Funk’ at the Amarillo Civic Center in Amarillo, Texas.

This special event was taped exclusively for VHS (and later DVD) and also featured talents from the World Wrestling Federation, such as Bret “The Hitman” Hart, Mankind, Jake “The Snake” Roberts & The Bushwhackers.

Needless to say, this wasn’t the first time and certainly not the last time, that Terry Funk retired from professional wrestling. This one lasted less than 2 weeks, before he went on a tour to wrestle in Japan and Europe.

The results of the show can be found below:

• “I want to retire, I really do” – AJ Styles

During his recent Twitch stream, former WWE Champion AJ Styles said he really wants to retire from in-ring competition.

“I want to retire, I really do.

I’m going to give you a breakdown of what’s going on this Friday. I’m going to leave – and listen, it could be a lot worse, but with everything going on with the COVID and what not, I’ve gotten to see my kids’ practices. That’s really cool for me.

My son’s games for varsity football are on Friday nights. I perform on Friday nights. This Friday isn’t one of those. For whatever reason, they moved it to Saturday. He’s going to have a Saturday football game and I’m going to get to see it.”

Styles signed a 5 year contract with WWE last year and stated in the past that this will be his last contract as an in-ring performer.
