In the main event segment of last night’s SmackDown, John Cena addressed Randy Orton ahead of their Undisputed WWE Championship match. Cena said he will face Orton for the last time at Backlash, and that your childhood will die when he defeats Randy and retains the Title.
Cena said Randy only has a job in WWE because of his family ties, and called Randy a lazy boy. John said he is the Greatest of All Time, and Randy is the Greatest of All Time at doing the bare minimum. John said Randy will leave Backlash like his 2006 drug test – a failure.
A man in a black mask went for an RKO on John, but Cena countered and took him out with an Attitude Adjustment. The real Randy came out from behind and took out Cena with an RKO.
Orton posed with the WWE Championship to end SmackDown.
The fake Randy Orton, who tried to attack Cena, was played by NXT wrestler Shawn Spears:
Speaking of Cena, a fan threw a bottle at him during his ring introduction. A WWE crew member was right behind this fan and the fan was immediately ejected from the arena.

“My Money Is On The Real Champ” – John Cena Sr. On The Backlash Main Event
As his son John Cena prepares for his last match against Randy Orton at WWE Backlash tonight in St. Louis, John Cena Sr. has made his support clear. This WWE Championship match is highly anticipated as Cena plans to retire at the end of 2025.
Just hours before the event, Cena Sr. shared his thoughts on Twitter. He brought up a memorable and brutal moment from their past rivalry, writing, “Backlash, or will the real champ destroy the legend killer?? Orton/Cena goes way back. I can still feel that kick in the head from Orton.” This was a reference to the Punt Kick Orton delivered to Cena Sr. in 2007.
Despite Orton’s recent dominance leading up to Backlash, Cena Sr. is confident in his son’s victory. He added, “However, it will be the final chapter in the rivalry between 2 greats. Because, ‘The Last Time is Now.’ My money is on, ‘The Real Champ.’”
The rivalry between John Cena and Randy Orton has been a significant part of WWE for nearly two decades. Some of their most iconic matches include:
– SummerSlam 2007: Cena retained his WWE Championship against Orton.
– Unforgiven 2007: Their WWE Championship match ended in a controversial disqualification.
– No Mercy 2007: Orton won the WWE Championship after punting Cena in the head in a Last Man Standing Match.
– Royal Rumble 2009: Cena defended his World Heavyweight Championship against Orton despite interference.
– Breaking Point 2009: Cena defeated Orton in an “I Quit” Match to win the WWE Championship.
– Hell in a Cell 2009: Orton regained the WWE Championship from Cena inside Hell in a Cell.
– Bragging Rights 2009: Cena won a 60-Minute Iron Man Match for the WWE Championship against Orton.
– Royal Rumble 2014: Orton successfully defended his WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Cena with help from The Wyatt Family.
Tonight’s match at Backlash will be the final chapter in this long-standing rivalry as Cena’s career draws to a close. Cena previously stated he would “make Randy Orton, just like his 2006 drug test: a failure,” while Orton has promised to make Cena’s last run a “living hell.”
