Joe Biden has withdrawn from the presidential re-election race, endorsing Vice-President Kamala Harris to take his place at the top of the Democratic ticket. This unexpected decision comes just months before the November election against Donald Trump, whom Biden has described as an existential threat to US democracy.
“While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term,” Biden stated in a letter announcing his decision.
Biden expressed gratitude to Harris and endorsed her as the Democratic nominee in a tweet, promising to address the nation in more detail later this week.
“My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as president for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my vice-president. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made,” he said.
“Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats – it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”
In response, Trump posted on Truth Social, criticizing Biden’s decision and claiming, “Biden was not fit to run for President, and is certainly not fit to serve – And never was!”
He added, “All those around him, including his Doctor and the Media, knew that he wasn’t capable of being President, and he wasn’t.”
A fan tweeted the following to WWE Champion Cody Rhodes after this:
“It’s time for you to step up big dawg.”
The American Nightmare replied:
“Maybe one day.”
Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs aka WWF Legend Kane tweeted the following about Biden’s decision:
“If Joe Biden is not fit to run for president, he is not fit to serve as president. He needs to RESIGN NOW!”
