• “I’m just trying to figure out what is the end game for AEW, and personally, I’m not seeing it” – WWE Hall Of Famer
As we noted before, WWE President & Chief Revenue Officer Nick Khan has been in talks with NJPW Officials for two months, regarding WWE becoming the official US partner of New Japan Pro Wrestling.
AEW President then cut a promo on the WWE-NJPW relationship rumors and said the following:
“I just want to address, as ‘The Forbidden Door’, I read in the Observer today that New Japan Pro Wrestling has had talks with WWE’s President Nick Khan. Well, Nick, I have to say if you have been talking to New Japan Pro Wrestling for two months, you’ve gotten a lot done.
Just in the last two weeks I’ve had Yuji Nagata, Ren Narita and Rocky Romero on AEW, I’ve reunited Roppongi Vice, I’ve had the New Japan IWGP United States Champion Jon Moxley defend the Title successfully on our show, retaining it, and I have future plans for New Japan Pro Wrestling for the US Title.
So you must’ve really gotten a lot done in the two months, Nick, and in fact, I think there’s only room for one Khan in the wrestling business, Nick, and it’s me. It’s Tony Khan, it’s not some con-man from Connecticut.”
Ahead of tonight’s Live #AEWDynamite at 10pm ET/9pm CT, and #AEWDoN on ppv Sunday, AEW Owner/President @TonyKhan, aka the Forbidden Door, addressed rumors of a relationship between @WWE & @njpwglobal, + what this means to @AEW! During the post-Double Or Nothing media scrum, Tony was asked why he cut a promo on the WWE-NJPW rumors, and here’s what he replied:
“I talked to New Japan, and I asked them if they thought it would be a good idea for a good promo and they thought it was great. I thought it would be a good promo, and so it made sense.
We have a lot of stuff going with New Japan, and everyone’s welcome to talk to each other in the wrestling business, but we’ve done some great stuff with New Japan over these last few weeks.
And I think we’re going to do some great things moving forward, and I’m excited it.”
Here’s what 2-time WWE Hall Of Famer Booker T said about this situation on his Hall Of Fame podcast:
“Tony Khan cut a big promo on Nick Khan, that kind of stuff, to me, I don’t know, I’m trying to figure out how that works out for my company.
Huge shots like that, me personally, I don’t get it.
But maybe it’s something, the internet, I remember hearing him mention certain websites and whatnot.
I’m just trying to figure out what is the end game for AEW, and me, personally, I’m not seeing it.
I’m just trying to figure out where we’re going with the thing.”
