John Cena has partnered with Neutrogena for their “Sunscreen You Can’t See” campaign, promoting their Ultra Sheer Mineral Face Liquid Sunscreen SPF 70. This collaboration sees Cena, alongside dermatologist Dr. Neera Nathan, emphasizing the importance of sun protection.
Cena’s involvement goes beyond a simple endorsement, as he shares his personal experience with skin cancer to underscore the campaign’s message. “It wasn’t until I went to a dermatologist and got a skin checkup and had a cancerous spot removed from my right pec,” Cena told People Magazine, detailing the moment he began taking sun protection seriously. “You got to come back in,” he recalls the ominous follow-up call.
He attributes his initial neglect of sun protection to a lack of awareness during his youth. “Never,” he says, regarding his early use of sunscreen. “My mom [Carol] raised five boys and I’m pretty sure she just wanted to just keep us alive and healthy. She had her hands full for sure, so I certainly do not blame her. And me being born in ’77, this was kind of all new knowledge.”
Cena’s experience highlights the importance of early sun protection. “A year later I went back and had another spot removed close to my right shoulder. It shows up like a white polka dot on the side of my chest and on my shoulder. If you watch WWE, you’ll be able to see them,” he shares.
Despite his usual optimism, Cena admits that the experience was unsettling. “When faced ‘with some uncomfortable stuff,’ he says, ‘my mind always goes to the worst-case scenario.'” He credits his dermatologist for guiding him through the process and now aims to be an advocate for sun safety. “I’m very fortunate to hopefully be a mouthpiece to get people to use sunscreen,” he states.
The Neutrogena campaign, which playfully incorporates Cena’s “You Can’t See Me” catchphrase, resonates with him. “They were like, ‘Hey, would you mind leaning into the “You Can’t See Me” joke?’ And I’m like, ‘Would I?!’ I’m already doing it anyway and the world kind of understands it,” Cena explains. “The spots are very funny, and if you can make people laugh and send a message at the same time, that’s great.”
Cena’s advice is straightforward: “I would say just get out of your own way.” He emphasizes the long-term benefits of sun protection, comparing it to the routine of brushing one’s teeth. “It’s something you should exercise to allow you to be who you are for a longer period of time. We all love to get out there on a sunny day and enjoy what the world has to offer. Gosh, just take that one extra step and brush your teeth and put on some Neutrogena Ultra Sheer, and you’ll be able to get a lot more days of doing that.”
