John Cena returned to WWE in 2023 for two runs. His first run was a short one, where he only made two appearances.

He appeared on an episode of RAW in March to set up his match against Austin Theory for the United States Championship at WrestleMania 39. He then lost to Theory in the opening match of WrestleMania 39 – Night 1.

Later in 2023, Cena returned for a two month full-time run, where he went to India for a Live Event match. Over there, he teamed up with World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins to defeat Ludwig Kaiser & Giovanni Vinci of Imperium. This was Cena’s first ever match in India, and most likely the last one.

At Fastlane, Cena teamed up with LA Knight to defeat Jimmy Uso and Solo Sikoa of The Bloodline in a tag team match.

Cena then ended this run with a singles match at Crown Jewel, where he lost to Solo Sikoa.

During a new interview with People Magazine, Cena revealed that he’s working on his exit strategy from WWE right now.

Here’s what the 16-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion said:

“I turned 46 this past year and I don’t have much time left in the WWE. I think it’s just the demand of age. You know, I’m trying to figure out when to close that chapter.

I wouldn’t be who I am — professionally or personally — without the WWE, and I promised myself that I would never simply just be there for my own sake.

Every time I perform, I want to give my all to the audience. And I’ve got to admit when I hit the 45 mark, I had to begin to try to form an exit strategy and I’m trying to work on that currently.

I just want to do what’s best for the company. If it’s a big final match or if it’s just a final match, or however I can be integrated into the product to let everyone know that this chapter is over, I’m willing to listen to what WWE has to say.”
