John Cena returned to WWE last month and had his second televised match of 2023 at Saturday’s Fastlane Premium Live Event, where he teamed up with LA Knight to defeat Jimmy Uso and Solo Sikoa in a Tag Team match.
With this win, Cena’s infamous 5-year PLE/PPV losing streak is over. Cena’s victory at Fastlane was his first PLE win since Super ShowDown 2018 in Australia, where he teamed up with Bobby Lashley to defeat Kevin Owens & Elias.
Cena unexpectedly returned last month because of the SAG-AFTRA strike, due to which the projects he and many other actors were working on were stopped indefinitely.
During the Fastlane press conference, the former 16-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion confirmed that when the strike ends, he will have to wind things up in WWE because he’s not allowed to wrestle while he’s working on projects in Hollywood.
“They do. I’ve made it clear that you can’t do both because of the liability insurance. If I were to try and juggle both, that’s very selfish because I would put a whole lot of people in the movie business out of work if something were to happen to me.
Yes, I stopped a project in the middle of it – I can’t even talk about the project because of the strike, but we’re in the middle of it.
As soon as we get back to work, we go back to work. I don’t control any of that. I’m crossing my fingers and I hope we can find a resolve everyone is happy with. For right now, I feel this is the best way I can help. To come back home to my family.”
WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H thanked Cena and said the following about him during the conference:
“When he’s here, don’t criticize it, don’t overthink it, just enjoy it, because it won’t last forever, and we all need to understand it.“
Speaking of Fastlane, former United States Champion Carlito returned to WWE and teamed up with current United States Champion Rey Mysterio and Santos Escobar to defeat Bobby Lashley & The Street Profits.
