In June 2007, WWE Superstar Chris Benoit caused the by far most horrible tragedy in professional wrestling history, when he ended up killing his wife Nancy Benoit (aka NWA/ECW/WCW valet Woman) and their 7-year old son Daniel Benoit, before taking his own life.
One of those who still speak very highly about Chris Benoit’s pro wrestling career is his former WWF/WWE rival Kurt Angle, who had countless battles with him over the years.
During a Q&A on AdFreeShows, Kurt explained why he is still praising Benoit, despite what Chris did in his final 3 days.
Here’s what the Olympic Gold Medalist had to say:
“The thing is, with Chris Benoit, you can’t forget he has a son still, okay? The reason why I talk about him so much is because of his son. He has a living son right now that thinks the world of his father. I mean, he’s giving him for what he’s done.
There’s no excuse for what Chris had done, but when you have a living human being that absolutely idolized his father, and you’re going to say ‘I don’t want to talk about Chris Benoit because he’s a piece of sh*t and what he did to his family is horrible’. What is that going to do for that kid?
A lot of times when I talk about Chris, I get negative feedback on social media, but you can’t excuse the fact that he was one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. You can’t ignore that. It’s really difficult to do that.
Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t condone anything he’s done, but I know this, Chris was the best in-ring performer I’ve ever been in the ring with, and I can’t lie about that.”
Chris Benoit left Ted Turner’s World Championship Wrestling after the WCW Souled Out 2000 pay-per-view and joined the World Wrestling Federation in February 2000.
He stayed with the company (later WWE) until the infamous tragedy took place in 2007.
The biggest moment of Benoit’s career was winning the World Heavyweight Championship in the main event of WrestleMania 20 in 2004.
