The Rock’s SmackDown promo with Cody Rhodes received mixed reactions. The Rock said he wants Cody Rhodes to be “his” champion and wants The American Nightmare’s soul. Cody will give his answer at Elimination Chamber on March 1st.
WWE Hall of Famer Mark Henry said the following about this segment on Busted Open Radio:
“I’m still trying to unpack the first clip, but the second clip made me really uncomfortable. It almost seemed like, ‘I want you.’ But it wasn’t ‘I want you,’ it was ‘I want your soul.’
And how do you ask a human being for their soul? How do you collect on a human soul? Those two are my two questions.”
Former WWF Attitude Era writer Vince Russo heavily criticizing WWE’s booking.
On his BroDown podcast, Russo questioned how WWE could make The Rock “mean nothing” despite his legendary status.
He called it the worst in-ring promo The Rock has ever done but blamed the storyline and angle rather than The Rock himself, saying the subject matter made it ineffective.
Here’s what Russo said:
“My take away from this show was, bro, are they really and honestly going to make The Rock mean nothing? Like seriously? Because I got to tell you, bro, listen, I worked with the dude for years and years.
This is the worst Rock in-ring promo I think I ever saw. It really had nothing to do with his performance. It had to do with the subject matter. It had to do with the angle. It had to do with what the hell they were talking about because I walked away.”
