• Matt Riddle Dropped Petition For Restraining Order Against Candy Cartwright 3 Days Before Hearing

During the #SpeakingOut movement, which started on Twitter a couple of months ago, WWE wrestler Matt Riddle was accused of rape by WWN wrestler Candy Cartwright.

Riddle claimed that he met Cartwright in 2016 and their affair began on November 6, 2017. He tried to part ways with her in June 2018, but they kept going, and he then attempted a definitive breakup in July 2019.

In the filing for a restraining order, he accused Cartwright of stalking, cyberstalking and harassing him and his wife since July 9, 2019. He claimed that he blocked her on social media and changed his phone number, only for her to text him from a burner phone saying “that if I did not leave my wife for her that I would be sorry and she would ruin my career.” He and his lawyer, Daniel J. Rose, contemplated filing for a restraining order a few days later, only to contact WWE and “inform them of the situation.”

The only place where Cartwright would have been barred from traveling to would be the WWE Performance Center. Cartwright’s attorney argued that “this is an illustration of the true intention” of Riddle’s petition. It was alleged that Riddle was only trying to keep her from his place of work.

The petition further stated that nothing happened until the day of an NXT taping in February 2020, when Cartwright showed up at Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida to create a scene there. However, Riddle and his lawyer didn’t provide a specific date for this incident, even though they had provided exact dates for everything that had happened before.

No further incidents were named until Cartwright’s tweet on June 19th, which accused him of sexual harassment. Riddle said that it went viral and caused him and his family “emotional distress”.

He accused Cartwright of posting his address and his wife’s phone number on Twitter, which led to his wife receiving numerous death threats and crank calls (which he claimed to prove via recordings of them).

The tweet Riddle and his lawyer referred to never exposed his wife’s phone number, and there wasn’t any address in it as well.

His address was posted by another fan account though.

Cartwright was then accused of leaking nude photos of Riddle last year. Rose gave the examples of the cases of WWE’s Sonya Deville’s stalker incident and AEW’s FTR’s nude photos getting leaked, which he used to try to prove that people can go to any extent to hurt others.

Rose filed that response for Riddle on August 31st, the day after the Riddle/Cartwright situation was referred to in a backstage segment at WWE Payback. One week later, he filed a notice of voluntary dismissal, dropping the case entirely. If they had proceeded to the hearing, a successful motion to dismiss on anti-SLAPP grounds could have resulted in Riddle having to pay legal fees and court costs to Cartwright.

Note: The website for the Orange County Court in Florida, which has jurisdiction over the metro Orlando area, started showing up search results for the case just a few weeks ago. According to the clerk’s office, in this type of case, data only appears online once the respondent has been served with the petition or the case has been dismissed.
