Attitude Era personality Jonathan Coachman revealed that his second stint in WWE faced backstage challenges, including Nia Jax’s alleged dislike of him and her push to have Renee Young replace him on the RAW commentary team.
Speaking on the Behind The Turnbuckle: The Last Word podcast, Coachman shared that after returning to WWE in 2018 following his time at ESPN, he informed Vince McMahon about scheduling conflicts with four golf events. Vince initially agreed but grew frustrated after Coachman missed his second event.
During his absences, WWE used temporary replacements, including Renee Young, who eventually took over his role full-time.
Coachman claimed that Nia Jax disliked him and led the effort to push Renee into his spot, though he wasn’t sure of the reasons behind her animosity. Coachman acknowledged that some people backstage were unhappy about his return and believed there was resistance to him resuming his role.
Here’s what The Coach said:
“She hates me, by the way — Nia Jax hates me. No, years ago, when — and this shows how crazy it was at the time — when I left ESPN and came back to WWE, I told Vince, ‘I’ve got four golf events already on my schedule that I don’t want to miss.’
In my first 10 years in WWE, I missed one Monday night. So, when I came back 10 years later and told Vince I’d miss four events in that calendar year, how do you think that went over?
He said, ‘No problem, Coach. We got you.’ Well, he had me… until the second missed event. Then he’s like, ‘This is some bullsh*t!’ And I was like, ‘But I told you.’ So they started filling in. I remember they put Renee in my spot.
Nobody liked the fact that they brought me back. For whatever reason — I’m not going to use the jealous word — it is what it is. But Nia Jax led the charge. Renee, Renee, Renee in Coach’s spot. She didn’t like me, for whatever reason.”
