Tonight’s episode of WWE NXT saw a surprising turn of events during the Women’s North American Championship match, as Thea Hail defeated Blake Monroe in a finish that was botched. Monroe seemed to have her shoulder up during the pin, but the referee counted to three, awarding the title to Hail and leaving fans and talent confused.

WWE also played Monroe’s music after the match, confirming that she was set to retain the title.

According to Fightful Select, the unexpected outcome caused a scramble backstage. Creative had planned for Monroe to retain, and this sudden change disrupted plans for several wrestlers over the coming weeks.

It is not immediately clear who is being held responsible for the mistake, as most involved focused on rapidly adjusting plans to ensure the remainder of the show could continue smoothly.

In a backstage segment after the match, Thea celebrated her title win and was congratulated by Jordynne Grace. Blake Monroe was crying over the decision as she claimed that she kicked out of the pin and said that she wants the referee fired.
