– WCW Veteran Says Chris Jericho Is Doing A Big Favor On NJPW
During a recent edition of “The Brand” podcast, former WWF writer Vince Russo, WCW Veteran Disco Inferno and co-host Jeff Lane talked about the Chris Jericho vs. Kenny Omega match that’s going to take place at next year’s NJPW Wrestle Kingdom PPV. Below is their discussion:
Jeff: He said the whole thing was a work in a tweet.
Disco: He worked everybody. We should have known it was a work because Jericho’s character on Twitter, he’s kind of stayed true to his character. He’s one of those only guys that use his Twitter effectively to make money and get himself over unlike a lot of these other guys on Twitter that when they’re the heels, they are posting pictures of their daughter and their birthday party.
But the deal is funny. In the big picture, it was entertaining while they were doing the work but now they’re gonna wrestle but wrestling is work, we know the match is scripted. My whole take on it, I think it’s funny how Wrestle Kingdom, yeah the “greatest pay-per-view of the year” (sarcastic) because there’s so many 4 and 5 star matches. So it would have gotten the buzz if Kenny Omega was gonna wrestle Okada or some other guy. Ok, the buzz would have been… oh this might be a six and eight like how many stars are they going to get. Right?
Jericho now did this angle on Twitter, posted that pretty cool video. Jericho, who’s 47 years old now, he’s like the headliner of the show. This match just feels like 100 times bigger than any other match Kenny Omega would have had because it’s a story and you’ve got a guy that can carry an angle. They can sell this.
People on the internet going like I can’t imagine this getting anything above 4 . They’re actually discussing how many stars they think this match is gonna get. But the reality is it’s gonna draw a lot more American fans from the States to that product. He’s doing New Japan a big favor. He’s drawing more eyes to it here in the States.
Russo: Chris Jericho turned 47. This is probably one of the one of the most in-shape 47 year old you’ll ever see. Take nothing away from Jericho. Jericho at 47 years old. He’s in the best shape that he can possibly be at that age of 47. But at the end of the day, he’s still 47 and they’re carrying-on about this match like Jericho’s in the prime of his career, like Jericho is a 28 year old kid.
I don’t know how old Omega is but that’s how they are carrying-on about this match. Freakin’ Jericho is 47. Jericho booked himself in a great spot. He’s going to make a freaking ton of money. I mean, come on bro, if this was MMA or this was boxing, how excited would we be about a 47 year old guy getting in the ring boxing or doing MMA?
Disco: But you’ve got their money anyway. The people that watch New Japan, nobody is gonna not watch that show. He’s drawing maybe some casual fans to that product.
It doesn’t matter how good the match is because they’re gonna draw all the money before the match takes place. So Chris Jericho can sell a match, Okada can’t. How is Okada gonna sell a match to fanbase here in the United States of America?
– Paige Already Having Backstage Heat In WWE?
Former WWE Divas Champion Paige was backstage on this week’s episode of Raw. A photo of her arriving at the site of this week’s Raw went viral before the show started.
Paige then posted a photo with Alicia Fox and a video with Renee Young on Instagram backstage from Raw, thus further informing the fans (even those who didn’t know at first) that she was backstage at Raw.
Word going on is that WWE officials weren’t happy with this as they wanted to keep her return a surprise, but most fans now know that her return is very near and it could even happen at Survivor Series 2017.
