• Paul Heyman Exposes An ECW Rumor As Fake BS

On a recent episode of the Carton & Roberts show, famous New York City radio host Craig Carton claimed that he was originally going to play the “Joey Styles” character, a ring announcer & play-by-play commentator that was portrayed by Joseph Bonsignore since 1992.

Here’s what Carton said:

“I was once offered a job in wrestling when I worked in Philly.

I don’t even know the name of the company. It was in the mid 90s. I was going to be Joey Styles.´

I was on the WIP Radio in Philadelphia, someone came to me from ECW and said, ‘we’d love you to be our ringside announcer, and you’re gonna go by the name Joey Styles’.

My schedule didn’t allow it or something. I don’t remember being against it, because I wasn’t making much money.

I don’t remember why I didn’t take up the job. But I was going to be Joey Styles, I’ll never forget the name because it was such a cool name.”

Keep in mind that this story is obviously complete and utter BS as Joey Styles already had his kayfabe on-screen name in 1992 while working for the North American Wrestling Alliance (NAWA), before he even started with Eastern Championship Wrestling (ECW). So it wasn’t up to anyone in ECW to find someone for a role that already existed in other promotions and ECW didn’t have the trademark for.

WWE Manager Paul Heyman (former ECW promoter & on-screen character Paul E. Dangerously) then tweeted the following:

“Sorry, @craigcartonlive. I’m calling bullsh*t on this one.

#JoeBonsignore was @JoeyStyles even before I hired him in 1993.

In ’94, we needed a replacement that summer.

There were a few considerations.

None of them were to be named #JoeyStyles.

#ECW @EvanRobertsWFAN”

Carton then replied the following:

“Sounds like Paul is confirming the story that they were looking for a replacement – I was one of the guys they talked to and like I said I know nothing about ECW or Paul or Styles – just telling you what happened 27 years ago.”

WWE Hall of Famer Bubba Ray Dudley joined the conversation and said the following:

“I think what Paul is trying to say is….

Now go home and get your fkn shinebox.

There is only ONE Joey Styles.”

Here’s a video that shows the Joey Styles character in 1992 before ECW, which proves Carton’s claim to be false:
