Below are a couple of top news stories of the day, featuring Janel Grant, Vince McMahon, and SmackDown.
• In a court filing submitted Friday in Connecticut Superior Court, attorneys for Janel Grant alleged that legal representatives for Dr. Carlon Colker and Peak Wellness acknowledged that Vince McMahon had financed Colker’s services as Grant’s physician and that Peak Wellness had deliberately withheld her medical records.
These allegations were originally outlined in Grant’s federal civil lawsuit against McMahon, WWE, and John Laurinaitis, filed last year. In her complaint, Grant claimed that McMahon coerced her into receiving treatment from Colker, that she was medicated without consent, and that she was denied access to her own medical records.
Grant’s latest filing was in response to a motion filed Wednesday by Colker’s attorneys, who requested that the court dismiss her bill of discovery. They argued that her request did not comply with Connecticut law, as she intended to use the information obtained in state court to add Colker and Peak Wellness as defendants in her federal case.
Additionally, Colker’s legal team contended that the bill of discovery should be rejected because some of the evidence collected by Grant’s attorneys was obtained through confidential settlement discussions.
In their memorandum on Friday, Grant’s attorneys countered that the confidentiality of those discussions was voided once Colker’s legal team made them public. They also disputed Colker’s interpretation of state discovery laws, asserting that Connecticut statutes do not prevent information from state-level proceedings from being used in a federal lawsuit.
