On March 25th 2022, WWE Hall of Famer Sunny was involved in a fatal 3-car crash on U.S. 1. Sunny crashed into a stopped vehicle while driving southbound on U.S. 1, north of Granada Boulevard.

The stopped vehicle then crashed into the vehicle in front of it. The driver of the vehicle (Julian Lafrancis Lasseter of Daytona Beach Shores, age 75) hit by Sunny was pronounced dead upon reaching the Halifax Health Medical Center.

She was charged with the following:

– DUI Manslaughter (DUI causing the death of a person)

– Driving with a suspended or revoked license (causing death or serious injury)

– 7 counts of DUI causing damage to a person or property

During her hearing, Sunny delivered a heartfelt speech in front of the Judge and Julian’s family. You can read her statement below:

“When I was 16-years-old I applied to college to study biology and pre-med. Because I wanted to be a doctor. I wanted to help people through their pain and suffering, but more importantly, I wanted to heal people.

The first line in the Hippocratic oath reads, ‘I will do no harm.’ On March 25th, 2022, I did the opposite of that, I did harm to someone else and my entire being was crushed. My career path took a different path from medical, but my morals and ethics remained the same.

During this time, I was able to think about times I helped people throughout my career. Through my time in the industry, I was able to help people from on spectrum to the other. I was able to entertain and bring happiness to people’s lives. Once I was able to help a stranger who was having a seizure at one of my appearances at a convention, and I’ve made terminally ill children’s’ dreams come true through the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

I have done something horrible, but I am so much more than the worst that I have done; I try to think about the good I’ve done, because when I think about what I did to the Lasseter Family that tragic day, for a stupid decision, I feel the regret and remorse deep inside my soul.

I know they don’t get to rest knowing he’s gone, because when I was 20 I lost my father as well to heart disease. Last August my 87-year-old grandmother passed away when I was incarcerated. I never got to say goodbye to her, just like they didn’t get to say goodbye to their beloved family member.

I know how it hurts and how it tears you up, and for that, I am truly sorry, I know my words are not enough, but please know that I will do everything I can to make sure that this never happens again.”

In the end, Sunny was sentenced to 17 years in prison.

She has been convicted and sentenced to a total of 10.6625 years in the Department of Corrections for causing death while operating a vehicle with a suspended or revoked driver’s license.

Additionally, she received 7 years for DUI causing death, which she will serve after completing the initial sentence. Four counts of DUI causing injury and three counts of DUI causing property damage were credited with 364 days served.

Following her incarceration, Sunny will face 8 years of probation, a substance abuse evaluation, 50 hours of community service, a $10,000 fine, and a permanent revocation of her driver’s license.

She has a 30-day window to appeal and is expected to be released at the age of 67.

According to PWInsider, WWF Legend Brutus ‘The Barber’ Beefcake’s wife Melissa Leslie was scheduled as a character witness for Sunny, but she didn’t show up at the hearing.

PWInsider also noted that some people in the wrestling business were upset at Sunny using Chris Candido’s death as the reason for her downfall:

“We heard from a lot of people within the wrestling world upset about Sytch using the death of Chris Candido as her ‘downfall’ in her statement to the court before sentencing, feeling there was behavior from her well before Candido’s passing that were red flags as to the direction that he was going in personally, as well as noting that there was infidelity there and it wasn’t on Candido’s part – and that Sytch’s own autobiography admits that.”
