R-Truth’s ongoing joke about John Cena being his “childhood hero” has become one of WWE’s most beloved running gags.

In a conversation with Chris Van Vliet, R-Truth revealed how the idea came about. The concept originated from a scripted segment, and Cena wholeheartedly supported it, even laughing and encouraging Truth to run with the idea.

Before fully embracing the gimmick, R-Truth sought Cena’s permission to dress and act like him, which Cena approved enthusiastically.

Truth shared, “I asked for his blessing for everything, even wearing his shorts. He said, ‘Run with it.’” Truth even joked about wanting to walk, talk, and “own everything” Cena did, which Cena found amusing and encouraged.

Here’s what Truth said:

“I broke him too with that one. That was good, man. And they’re still running with it. I love it man. I’m not gonna bust nobody’s bubble. He is my childhood hero.

No, they actually had it written out. Like, ‘Oh this is fun, funny.’ I did text John about dressing up like him and I got the ‘Hahahah’ laugh, you know the emoji. I think it’s great, run with it. So I become his childhood hero with his blessing.

Yes, I asked for his blessing for everything, even wearing his shorts. He said, ‘Truth, you don’t have to ask me to wear shorts to the ring.’

I said, ‘Man I wanna be you. I wanna own everything you do, walk talk, I wanna be you.’ He said, ‘Run with it.’”
