• On This Day In Pro Wrestling History (August 30, 1993) – WWF SummerSlam 1993
On this day in Pro Wrestling history on August 30, 1993, the World Wrestling Federation aired ‘WWF SummerSlam 1993’ LIVE on PPV from the The Palace of Auburn Hills in Auburn Hills, Michigan.
This pay-per-view was originally supposed to be main evented by Hulk Hogan defending the WWF World Heavyweight Championship against Bret “The Hitman” Hart, but Hogan retired from Professional Wrestling to concentrate on filming the TV-series ‘Thunder in Paradise’ instead, so he dropped the belt back to Yokozuna at the previous PPV (King of the Ring 1993) and the World Wrestling Federation turned “The Narcissist” Lex Luger babyface, presenting him as an All American Superhero, in an attempt to build up the next ‘Hulk Hogan’. Needless to say, we all remember how that worked out.
Here are the PPV results:
Razor Ramon defeated Ted DiBiase
WWF Tag Team Championship: The Steiner Brothers (c) defeated The Heavenly Bodies
WWF Intercontinental Championship: Shawn Michaels (c) defeated Mr. Perfect by countout
Irwin R. Schyster defeated The 1-2-3 Kid
Bret Hart defeated Doink the Clown by DQ
Jerry Lawler defeated Bret Hart by DQ
Ludvig Borga defeated Marty Jannetty
Rest in Peace match: The Undertaker defeated Giant Gonzalez
The Smoking Gunns & Tatanka defeated Bam Bam Bigelow & The Headshrinkers
WWF World Heavyweight Championship: Lex Luger defeated Yokozuna (c) by count-out
• Reason Behind WWE Pairing Up Roman Reigns & Paul Heyman
As seen at the end of last week’s SmackDown, Roman Reigns joined forces with Paul Heyman.
If you see the benefit in this angle for Reigns, it’s going to get him over with the fans as the biggest heel in WWE. He also needed a mouthpiece due to the character change he’s going through.
The Wrestling Observer noted that WWE wanted Heyman back on TV because he hasn’t been doing anything since Brock Lesnar took a break after WrestleMania. He was also removed as the Executive Director of RAW, so there was nothing left for him to do in WWE.
Heyman has a high wage in WWE, which is why officials wanted him to do something big instead of sitting out the tapings, and the biggest thing possible for him could be to manage Roman Reigns.
