Rey Mysterio faced off against Santos Escobar on this week’s episode of SmackDown for a shot at Austin Theory’s United States Championship.
Escobar defeated Mysterio via Doctor’s Stoppage to earn the title match, which will take place two weeks later on SmackDown (on the post-SummerSlam episode).
The commentary team announced that Mysterio got hurt after he found himself at the receiving end of Escobar’s Suicide Dive. The doctor checked on Mysterio and made it clear that he wouldn’t be able to continue the match.
Previously, it was reported that Mysterio’s injury was a storyline one. However, that isn’t the case.
Fightful Select is reporting that The Master Of The 619 legitimately got hurt on SmackDown. Santos Escobar was scheduled to defeat him clean and it was going to be followed by a backstage segment, which got nixed.
It’s still unknown what kind of injury Mysterio has suffered and how long it’ll keep him out of action for.
