In the main event of WrestleMania 38 – Night 2, Universal Champion Roman Reigns defeated WWE Champion Brock Lesnar to become the Undisputed Champion.
However, this wasn’t the plan in late 2021.
On January 1st 2022, at the Day 1 PLE, Roman vs. Brock for the Universal Title was scheduled to take place. However, that didn’t happen due to Reigns getting pulled from the show because he tested positive for COVID-19.
This resulted in Vince McMahon making major changes to the creative plans. He booked Lesnar to end Big E’s reign to become the new WWE Champion and decided to do a Title Unification Match at WrestleMania.
Here’s what Fightful Select reported:
“Prior to WWE Day 1 2022, there were no plans to combine the WWE and Universal Championship.
However, when Reigns contracted COVID and was pulled from the show, the late decision was made for Brock Lesnar to be added to the WWE Title match, win it, and then compete in a unification match at WrestleMania 38.
Prior to that, there were no plans to unify the two titles.”
