Ronda Rousey Reveals The Real Reason Behind Her WWE Departure

Ronda Rousey WWE SummerSlam 2019

Below are a couple of top WWE news stories of the day, involving Ronda Rousey and SmackDown.

• Ronda Rousey has confirmed the reason behind her departure from WWE, which occurred after her match against Shayna Baszler at SummerSlam 2023, surprising many fans.

Many fans thought she left because of creative issues, but that’s not the case.

Rousey made a brief return to wrestling during Pro Wrestling Revolver’s Unreal event in 2023, where she teamed up with Marina Shafir against Athena and Billie Starkz. She also made her ROH debut in a one-off match in November. Since then, Rousey has not competed, and her future in wrestling remains uncertain.

In an interview on the Pretty Intense podcast with Danica Patrick, Rousey revealed that her WWE exit was due to a neurological injury. She explained that her condition prevents her from handling impacts to the head.

Rousey expressed her longing for activities like rolling and grappling, which involve sparring without hitting, but acknowledged that her past neurological injuries make it impossible for her to endure head impacts or unnecessary blows. She noted that these injuries accumulate over time and do not fully heal.

Here’s what she said:

“I also miss rolling, which is like sparring on the ground. I miss grappling, which is sparring without hitting each other. But with my history of neurological injuries, I can’t take hits to the head anymore or endure impacts beyond what’s necessary. So, I can’t really do it for fun.

Neurological injuries accumulate over time, and it’s not something you recover from—they just build up.”
