ECW Legend Sabu emerged victorious in a brutal Barbed Wire Rope Match against former AEW wrestler Joey Janela during Joey Janela’s Spring Break 9, part of the GCW Collective events on WrestleMania 41 Eve at the Palm’s Casino in Las Vegas.
The match, advertised as Sabu’s retirement match, delivered on its extreme promises. However, the night didn’t start smoothly for the hardcore legend. Sabu struggled to even get into the ring due to the absence of ring steps. Once inside, the violence began almost immediately.
Janela dodged an early dive from Sabu, sending the ECW icon crashing into the barbed wire ropes and falling into a barbed wire-covered structure outside the ring. Janela had to forcibly pull Sabu free from the tangled mess of wire.
Sabu’s longtime ECW manager Bill Alfonso soon rushed to ringside and began launching chairs into the ring, which Sabu gladly put to use against Janela. But the “Bad Boy” quickly regained control, hurling Sabu into a board wrapped in barbed wire. Sabu crashed through it, flew between the ropes, and hit the concrete floor below.
Blood streamed from the back of Sabu’s head, leaving many fans wondering if the match would continue. Janela intensified the violence by putting Alfonso through a barbed wire board.
The chaos escalated when the Cogar Brothers interfered, attacking Janela. Then, the arena went dark.
In one of the night’s most memorable moments, The Sandman made a surprise appearance, kendo stick in hand and beer in the other. Fans sang along to “Enter Sandman” as he made his way to the ring, delivering brief backup before being taken out himself.
Sabu then seized control, unleashing a relentless assault on Janela. He delivered vicious chair shots and sent Janela crashing through multiple barbed wire boards, eventually launching him into the same barbed wire structure that had trapped Sabu earlier.
In the climax, Sabu hit his signature chair-assisted leg drop and scored the win in what was billed as his final match. Fans in attendance were impressed, calling it a fitting end to the career of one of wrestling’s most hardcore icons.
Both men hugged after the match:
