Stephanie Vaquer’s match against Mercedes Moné at AEW x NJPW: Forbidden Door showcased the Chilean wrestler’s readiness for a larger stage, sparking speculation that she might join All Elite Wrestling.
However, Vaquer ended up signing with WWE and has recently made her debut in NXT, where she is expected to shine.
There’s been debate over whether WWE would have signed Vaquer if she hadn’t first appeared on AEW. This topic gained attention after Moné hinted in her newsletter that their match might have influenced WWE’s decision.
Here’s what Mercedes wrote:
“Another time was with Stephanie Vaquer for AEW’s Forbidden Door. Stephanie flew in that day and got to the building maybe an hour before the doors opened. We just talked about the match a little where she speaks a whole different language (Spanish).
That was so hard. I’m like, my God, we don’t get time to walk over our moves, we speak two different languages, and we’re both tired, jet lagged, and hungry, too. Yet, that also turned out to be such a great match.
She was signed by the WWE days later. I’d like to think our match had a say in that!”
Vaquer, however, downplayed this idea, sharing on Instagram that her success was due to her own hard work, stating:
“When you work hard for a long time, it always brings rewards.”
Stephanie Vaquer, now 31, began wrestling in 2009 in Chile under the ring name Dark Angel. She later moved to Mexico, where she also gained citizenship and built a strong career in Lucha Libre.
After further advancing her career in Japan, she received a WWE tryout, though she was not initially hired. Given her recent success, some fans speculate that her appearance on AEW television played a part in her eventual signing with WWE.
