• Old School WWF Announcer Would Have Celebrated His Birthday

Today would have been the 77th birthday of Old School WWF Announcer “Mean” Gene Okerlund.

After making a name for himself in Verne Gagne’s American Wrestling Association between 1970 and 1983, Gene Okerlund joined the World Wrestling Federation in early 1984 as one of quite a few AWA names that jumped ship back then.

“Mean” Gene, who is still considered the greatest backstage interviewer in professional wrestling history, stayed with the WWF for almost 10 full years, before he joined Ted Turner’s World Championship Wrestling in late 1993.

Shortly before Vince McMahon bought WCW in 2001, Okerlund left the company, but returned to his old workplace, the World Wrestling Federation, at WWF WrestleMania X-Seven.

In 2006, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame by his close, personal friend “The Immortal” Hulk Hogan.

• Steve Austin Reveals Who He Thinks Is Going To Be The Next Big Star In WWE

During a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, WWE Hall of Famer Stone Cold Steve Austin put over RAW wrestler Andrade and thinks he could be the next big star in WWE.

Below is what Austin said:

“Right now, the people that are on top are the people that should be on top. But I called this two years ago watching his match when he did the favors for somebody that night, and I said, ‘Man, this Andrade kid is going to be a player one of these days.’ I think he’s proving that.

He still has a ways to go, but it’s just tweaking that character. The kid’s a hell of a damn worker.

The people that have tremendous success either have a gimmick that is so close to them that it’s basically them turned up or it’s so far away from them that it cannot be missed. It’s all about how you resonate with the people.

Wrestling is a relationship, whether you’re a heel or a babyface, you’re establishing yourself as a brand. How do you make them feel? They’re living vicariously through your storylines.

They feel strength, vulnerability, or power. If it works, you’re doing something that resonates with people in regards to entertainment and wanting to invest in a person.”
