Mustafa Ali was scheduled to face Dominik Mysterio for the NXT North American Championship at the No Mercy premium live event, but he got released from WWE before this PLE.
Trick Williams then replaced Ali by winning a #1 contenders match and then went on to defeat Dominik for the Title at No Mercy.
The Wrestling Observer then reported that while Trick won the Title, Mustafa wasn’t scheduled to win the Title.
However, in a new report from Fightful Select, they are reporting that there were plans for Ali to become the North American Champion.
The plan was for Dirty Dom to defeat Dragon Lee to retain the Title on the September 25th episode of RAW due to interference from Ali. This would’ve led to a Triple Threat Match at No Mercy between Dominik, Lee & Ali, where Ali would’ve become champion.
This is the reason why NXT writers were frustrated when Ali got released, as they had to change plans.
On this week’s episode of NXT, Dominik defeated Trick in a rematch with help from Judgment Day to win back the North American Title. Trick only lasted 3 days as champion, thus setting the record for the shortest reign with the North American Title.
