Despite Tony Khan’s optimistic public statements about AEW’s TV rights deal, which is set to expire at the end of this year with Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), behind the scenes, he reportedly feels disappointed with the current offers on the table.

Current Negotiations

It is believed that both AEW and WBD have yet to finalize a new agreement. However, an exclusivity window exists between the two entities, lasting through the summer. Should a deal be reached, an announcement is likely to occur in the summer or fall. During a recent interview, Khan expressed confidence in securing a deal, urging fans to remain optimistic.

WBD’s Strategic Considerations

Amid widespread discussions about WBD potentially losing the rights to the NBA, CEO and President David Zaslav is expected to reassess the network’s other content properties, including AEW. Matt Belloni of Puck News reports that Zaslav, along with TNT Sports head Luis Silberwasser, aims to retain AEW’s 5 hours of weekly programming across TNT and TBS, which includes shows like Dynamite, Rampage, and Collision.

Time-Sensitive Negotiations

Belloni further highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting, “The clock is ticking. I’m told the exclusive window closes in July, and AEW leader Tony Khan is said to be disappointed with the offer currently on the table.”

Khan’s Public Statements

During the Double or Nothing press conference on Sunday night, Khan expressed his satisfaction working with David Zaslav, stating, “I’m happy working for Mr. David Zaslav and I’m hoping we can do it for a long time.”

The uncertainty surrounding the NBA rights could potentially increase AEW’s leverage, providing an opportunity to negotiate a more favorable deal.
