Below are a couple of top AEW & WWE news stories of the day.

• Earlier this week, WrestlePurists reported that Buddy Matthews has signed a new contract with AEW.

There had been rumors that Matthews might return to WWE, especially since he is married to WWE star Rhea Ripley. However, it has been confirmed that this is not happening.

According to the Wrestling Observer, the new deal was actually agreed upon months ago. Tony Khan offered Matthews a lucrative contract after Matthews had previously tried to give notice, as AEW was not planning to release anyone to go to WWE.

• Pat McAfee appears to be stepping back from his WWE role once again. He initially took a break from WWE in September 2022 when he joined ESPN College GameDay, which conflicted with his travel schedule. Before that, McAfee was a commentator on SmackDown alongside Michael Cole.

The plan was for him to return to WWE after the college football season. However, due to his daily radio show, ESPN commitments, and becoming a father, he had to reduce his WWE activities. McAfee made appearances at the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania 39 and did a segment on SmackDown with The Rock and Austin Theory.

McAfee returned to commentary earlier this year on RAW, reuniting with Michael Cole. This week, McAfee announced his return to ESPN’s College GameDay, which airs every Saturday during the football season, starting August 24th.

While nothing is confirmed, the Wrestling Observer noted that it’s likely McAfee will take another hiatus from WWE during the football season.
