• Tony Khan Reveals Why William Regal Is Leaving AEW
As we all know by now, William Regal is leaving AEW and he will return to WWE in a backstage role in January 2023.
During today’s media call to promote this Saturday’s ROH Final Battle 2022 PPV, AEW President Tony Khan confirmed this as well.
Tony revealed that Regal approached AEW’s Legal Head Megha Parekh in October and requested her to not renew his contract at the end of the year, because he wants to return to WWE and coach his son Bailey, who is a young wrestler in NXT.
He also wants to coach alongside some of his old friends in his golden years.
Khan talked with Regal and understood the situation, and wanted to do the right thing for Regal’s family (given how Khan is dealing with a personal family issue as well – his mother suffered 2 strokes recently), and agreed to grant him his release from the company, but after making some major changes to accommodate his request.
That’s when the idea of MJF turning on Regal was pitched.
