Below are a couple of top WWE & AEW news stories of the day, featuring WrestleMania 40.

• WWE originally promoted The Rock vs. Roman Reigns for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 40, but it ended up being Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes II this Sunday.

During an interview with ESPN, WWE’s Chief Content Officer Triple H had the following to say about the backstage booking process:

“Now it’s a different time, and the way I do things is slightly different. My career, I learned from being here, but there were things along the way that I always thought I would do differently. In this time now, I get to make those calls and with a large team of people.

Whether people will want to believe it or not, I think we were sort of looking at this as here’s where we’re going to go to get this started and it has the opportunity of going this way or that way. We always have to call audibles every single week. Everything you do is dependent on reactions. That’s what we do as an industry.

The beautiful thing with this group and with Cody and Roman and Rock especially, everybody’s got their ear to the ground. And then we all just get together and figure the s**t out.”

• Matt Hardy’s AEW contract has expired. While he has been offered a new contract, he hasn’t signed anything yet, so he’s a free agent right now.

During an interview with Chris Van Vliet, Matt was asked about the possibility of returning to WWE this weekend at WrestleMania 40.

Here’s what the Tag Team Legend said:

“It’s great that people think that. That makes me happy. It makes people excited. If you hear someone talk about a ladder match, are [The Hardy Boyz] gonna show up? That’s great. I don’t know. It’s pro wrestling and in pro wrestling, never say never.”

Jeff Hardy is still under contract with AEW. However, All Elite Wrestling released 10 names yesterday, so you never know.

The Wrestling Observer reported a few days back that Austin Theory & Grayson Waller could get pulled from the Tag Team Championship Ladder Match at WrestleMania 40, and could be replaced by a returning tag team.
